Relativistic Corrections in a Series of Helium Excited States

چکیده
The irnportance of relativistic and radiative corrections in atomic and molecular systems bas been emphasïzed by several authors [1,2] _ The usual point of departure has been the Breit equation [3], a generahzation of the Dirac equation representing two relativistic particles in an external fïeId. This theory is beheved to be correct to terms of order (v/c)~. In this paper we propose to calculate relativistic corrections for a series of excited states in helium. Thïs work is motivated in part by tbe high precision to which these energy Ievels are now known approaching one part in ten mïllion. The sequence of excited states 1~2~2 !a3P, Is3d3 ls3D, ls4f4 IJF,___ is attractive from a theoretical point of view in tbat these represent the lowest states of their respective symrnetry types_ Thus the simplest farm of the variational prïnciple is applicable. Moreover, the non-relativistic electron correlation problem is expected to be minima& particularly for the higber states in tbe sequence.

Higher-order Stark effect on an excited helium atom
Degenerate perturbation theory is used to study dipole susceptibilities of an excited helium atom in an external electric field. The dependence of the perturbed energy of levels in atoms on fine-structure effects and on the higher-order Stark effect is investigated. Numerical results have been obtained for the (1s3p) P0 and (1s3p) P2 states of helium. The magnitude of the electric field and the...

Auger dominant metastable states in the antiprotonic helium atoms are studied by using the Complex Coordinate Rotation method. Relativistic corrections for the bound electron related to the Breit interaction have been calculated using CCR wave functions. Higher order relativistic and QED effects have been included into consideration to get precise theoretical values for transition frequencies.

A generalized Hylleraas-type basis set with three nonlinear parameters is proposed to study three-body systems interacting via coulomb forces within the framework of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. This basis set improves the rate of convergence with respect to previous ones, specially for nonsymmetric systems and excited states of two electron atoms. Accurate binding energies and other pro...
متن کاملQuantum Electrodynamics of the Helium Atom
Using singlet S states of the helium atom as an example, I describe precise calculation of energy levels in few-electron atoms. In particular, a complete set of effective operators is derived which generates O(mα6) relativistic and radiative corrections to the Schrödinger energy. Average values of these operators can be calculated using a variational Schrödinger wave function. 31.30.Jv, 12.20.D...
متن کاملExploding electron bubbles The first observations of excited electron bubbles in superfluid helium reveal some puzzling features From
The “particle in a box'' is a standard second year quantum mechanics problem, much beloved by lecturers and mastered by successive generations of undergraduates. An electron bubble in liquid helium provides a strikingly simple example of this kind of system, and theory predicts that it should exhibit a series of excited states. But these states have never been demonstrated experimentally. Now D...
